Newsletter 6th Sept 2021

Weekly Newsletter – Monday 6th September 2021

Dear parents and carers,

I hope you have had a great summer and been able to enjoy some sun and family time. It has been fantastic to see so many smiley faces arrive each morning last week and today. A particularly warm welcome to our new Reception class and their families.

We are delighted to welcome Mr Dan Riley to the school as Deputy Headteacher and Year 6 teacher. We are sure that he will be an asset to the school and wish him all the very best at Hillside!

COVID 19 Regulations

Thankfully, there is no longer a requirement for class bubbles and face coverings in school. It has been wonderful to start our whole school assemblies again and allow children from different classes to meet and play together. The only reason this may change is if there is a very high number of cases in school and we are advised otherwise by local public health. There is also no longer a need for face coverings to be worn by anyone on the school grounds. It is expected and advised that face coverings are worn in enclosed spaces when in contact with people you don’t normally meet. Therefore, parents will be asked to wear face coverings if entering the building.

We look forward to welcoming parents into school for various events throughout the coming term as well as volunteers who have helped so much over the years with additional reading. If any parents, carers or grandparents have any spare time to come into school and help with reading, please get in touch with the office or class teachers.

Please note that any pupils that have symptoms of Covid 19 should get a PCR test and remain away from school until they have the results. If the result is positive they will need to isolate as advised by test and trace but close contacts or household members do not need to isolate. Please read the separate email detailing national self-isolation guidance.

Our staff are continuing to take twice weekly tests until the end of September and we will, of course, continue to follow good hygiene and ventilation procedures in school.

Drop off and pick up

Please can I ask that everyone adheres to the staggered start and finish times so that we can avoid traffic congestion and queues at the gates.

We thank families for driving carefully and slowly around school, using the one way system, parking considerately and keeping to good time. For your information, the one way route is to come in from Chester Road, up Bates Lane (where both KS1 and KS2 entrance gates are located) and then left onto Old Chester Road and around past the allotments and cemetery.

KS2 Snack

Snacks will be available for KS2 children from Wednesday 8th September. A menu and pricelist is available on the school website.

Parents’ Evenings

Parents will get a chance to speak to their child’s teacher next half term. There will be a further information about this sent closer to the time.

Clubs and extracurricular provision

There will be a range of after clubs starting the week beginning 20th September and running until the week beginning 22nd November. These will be a mixture of free clubs run by staff - and also externally run clubs later in the year - for which there will be a small charge to parents. Letters about clubs will be sent out week beginning 13th September.

We also look forward to the return of sports fixtures against other schools and intra-school competitions.

Uniform and PE days

It was great to see the whole school looking so smart last week. A reminder that we do expect pupils to adhere to school uniform.  When it is your child’s usual PE day, or if they are in an after school sports club, they should continue to come in their school PE kit on that day. This saves a lot of time (and space) at school. Reminder that school PE kit continues to be white t-shirt, blue shorts and trainers. In the colder months, a tracksuit can be worn.

Reading and Homework

Teachers will be communicating reading and homework expectations in their Autumn Term newsletter and on the class page within the school website. It is so important that parents read with their children at home and ensure they do their individual reading. This is something we will be tracking very closely this year. We know, from long experience, that those parents who ensure their child reads regularly are putting their child at a distinct advantage in a range of subjects. The inverse is also true for those that do not do this. We look forward to celebrating the reading achievements of the pupils over the coming term.
