The Wonder

'The Wonder' was a whole school collaborative project and creative exhibition held in July 2017 to showcase the children of Helsby Hillside Primary School's skllls in art, music, design, techniology, science, maths, literacy and ICT.  The school hall was transformed into a multi sensory experience that was both inspiring and overwhelming, visited by pupils and their families, people from the local community and colleagues from other schools in the local authority.

It was based on the book 'The Wonder', written and illustrated by author Faye Hanson, who visited our school to launch the project.

As part of our work to enhance our curriculum provision 'The Wonder' project provided the opportunity to

  • Further develop creativity and enhance the children’s experiences.
  • A professional development opportunity to share and develop knowledge, techniques and skills.
  • Provide an opportunity to engage the whole wider community.
  • Afford the school a platform to share practice and creative work with other professionals.
  • Provide the children with an audience and purpose to showcase and celebrate their work.

The Project

Led by our talented and inspirational staff, the children worked in a variety of mediums and written genres over a period of three weeks. Their work culminated in the exhibition you can see below.

Enhancing provision

Alongside this teacher led work, the project enabled the children to work with different artists and a poet and take part in an 'Wonder day' at Helsby High School which immersed the children in the story with a Cave Bus, Circus Skills Workshops, Wonder Dome (mobile planetarium) Workshops and a Helter-Skelter.

Engaging the community

The project engaged other local educational establishments including three of our feeder pre-schools / nurseries (Helsby Preschool, Homestead Day Nursery and Badger’s Barn Day Nursery) and our Local High school (Helsby High).

It enabled us to involve the community with parents and carers coming into school to support our creative work and also offer their skills. The parents and local community also kindly donated materials and items which enhanced our work. It truly would not have been possible without their involvement and support.
