Welcome back and ‘Happy New Year’!

Welcome back everyone. We hope that you and the children had a magical Christmas and that the children enjoyed themselves. We hope that everyone is looking forward to the new term with lots of exciting things to look forward to. Please don’t forget that parent progress evenings are on Tuesday 6th February and Thursday 8th February. This will provide you with an opportunity to discuss your child’s ‘Interim Report’ (Y1-Y6) which will be issued on Monday 5th February. If you have any questions or queries regarding your child’s progress or any other matter, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Christmas Productions

We have received some terrific feedback about the KS1 and KS2 Christmas productions. The children certainly did us all proud and were fantastic! We hope that they enjoyed the experience. Hillside definitely has talent and we are sure that there are a number of pupils destined for a career on the stage! Thank you again for all your help and support with the productions and for coming to watch. We raised over £600 and have sent £100 to each of our nominated charities – Medcare, Will to Work, Kidney Research UK and Save the Family. The remaining funds went on end of term treats and covering the costs incurred of putting on the shows.

Writing

As you know, yesterday staff were working on developing better ways of helping the children improve their writing. These personalised targets will be shared with the children this week. From Year 2 to Year 6, we have also provided cards to go home listing spellings that the children are particularly struggling with. Please practice these words with your child. The words are to be learnt in addition to any regular spellings set each week.

Extra-curricular activities

A list of all our before/after-school clubs and extra-curricular activities are being sent home today and are also available to view on the school website, under Sports and Clubs. Please can forms be returned by this Friday, 12th January, please see separate letters/flyers to apply for Mini Mello Yoga, Art Jam and Streetdance As you will see, we have some new sports for the children to try – we hope Y3/4 enjoy the volleyball sessions.

Parent governor nominations

One of our parent governors, Steve Jones, is coming to the end of their four year term of office. He is currently keen to stand again but, if there are any other parents who are interested in becoming a governor and would like more information about the role, please speak to Mr Richardson or ask in the school office. Thank you. All nominations or expressions of interest need to be made by Friday 19th January please.

Platinum Award

This Thursday our ‘Sports Crew’ are going to Helsby High School to be presented with our Platinum School Games Award. This is a fantastic achievement for school and one we are very proud of, look out for the photos on Twitter!

Attendance update

The coughs and colds at the end of term impacted on our attendance and the overall figure for the term was 97.5%.

The autumn term figures for each class were:-

Reception - 98.04

Year 1 - 96.92

Year 2 - 97.28

Year 3 - 98.08

Year 4 - 97.54

Year 5 - 96.83

Year 6 - 97.77

A good attendance is very important to your child’s education and it is clearly beneficial if it is as close to 100% as we can get. Thank you for your continued help and support. (Please remember that if your child is sick or has diarrhoea, they should be kept off school for a minimum of 48 hours from the last occurrence).

Medcare Appeal

We have received the following message from Dr Pauline Hutchinson, the chairman of Medcare, one our nominated charities.

‘Many thanks for the support given by Hillside Primary School for the work of Medcare with children in Uganda. Medcare is preparing to send a shipping container to Uganda which will be filled with medical and physiotherapy equipment, health and hygiene products and playground equipment. These goods will be for the benefit of the 50 disabled children who will move into their new home in June 2018. We are setting up a brief appeal for health and hygiene goods in January and February 2018 which will be packed and put into the container, ready for shipping in March. Once again many thanks for your support. Wishing yourself, the teachers and pupils a very Happy New Year’.

Please see their winter newsletter which is available to view on the school website and appeal posters around school for further details. If wish to donate any items please send into school between now and half term. Thanks.
