Parking before and after school and Link Club

As part of our efforts to ensure the safety of all our pupils, we are going to ask parents dropping off and picking up before school and after school at clubs or link club to park on Bates Lane or Chester Road and not in the playground.  We had an incident before half-term when a car was driving into the playground and nearly hit a child.  We think this measure will mean that families walking in and out of school at this time will be safer.  Staff will continue to use the car park at the rear of school but this will be closed from 8.30am until 4pm as usual.  Any problems regarding this, please let Mr Richardson know.  Thank you for your understanding with this matter.

Parent questionnaire

Thank you very much to everyone who has completed the parent questionnaire last term.  The outcomes were very positive thank you.  A letter from Dr Morley (Chair of Governors) and Mr Richardson (headteacher) regarding this will be sent out next week.

Sports News

The football team lost 5-1 at Frodsham CE last week.  The team is starting to show improved team work and we hope this continues in their next match.

Y6 start their bowls lessons this week with John Clement from Helsby Community Sports Club.  Last year the children really enjoyed the sessions and we hope that this year’s class do too!  They play in the church hall every Monday afternoon and will move out to the Sports Club greens in the summer term.

Learning and Teaching Review

As part of the schools self evaluation, this week a headteacher and Ofsted inspector from Chester will be undertaking a review of learning and teaching in school.  The outcomes will be reported in next week’s newsletter.

Y5 trip to London

We hope that Y5 have a great day trip to London on Thursday!  They have an action packed day planned and we look forward to hearing all about it on their return!

Stay and Play – Reception

Reception parents are invited to ‘Stay and Play’ on Friday morning from 8.55am until 9.30am.  Mrs Fletcher-Curran and Mrs Clarke have planned some activities for children and parents to do together.  It will provide parents with an opportunity to see how the children learn in school and to ask questions.  We do hope that you can join us!

Children in Need!

It is Children in Need on Friday.  We are asking children and staff to bring in some coins so we can try and make a ‘Kilometer of Coins!’  All coins will be counted and the money sent to Children in Need.  As always, we like to support this worthwhile and high profile national charity.

Outstanding results for Hillside!

We have just received confirmation of this year’s end of key stage attainment results and there are some outstanding results to report!  91% of last year’s Y6 pupils achieved national expectations (level 4 and above) in all three key areas of reading, writing and mathematics combined which is 12% above the national figure of 79%.  38% of the children exceeded national expectations in all 3 areas (level5/level 6) compared to 24% nationally.  These figures, alongside the fact that nearly all children made at least two levels of progress (good) and around 40% made more than expected progress (3 levels), contribute to a terrific set of results.  Well done to all the children and staff for their hard work!  Results at the end of Year 2 were also high and significantly above national figures in all areas.  93% achieved national expectation (level 2B) in reading (compared to 81% nationally), 83% in writing (70% nationally) and 90% in maths (compared to 80% nationally).

A significant group attained well above the national expectation (level 3): 50% in reading (compared to 31% nationally), 23% in writing (16% nationally) and 47% in maths (compared to 24% nationally).  Again, these are fantastic results and well done to all the children and staff for their hard work!

We will continue to work hard to ensure all our children make at least good progress and achieve their potential.  We hope you find this information useful.  If you would like further information, please ask Mr Richardson.

Parent Governor Vacancy

We can confirm the we have received one nomination for the current parent governor vacancy so no election is required.  Louise Rowlands is now re-elected onto the Full Governing Body.

Mr McEntee, Mr Richardson and Mr Mitchell are making good progress with their moustaches!   Donations to the Movember charities (prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health) can be made to the school office or online at,’Hillside Mo Bros’!  Thank you so much for your support!

Record Profits

The figures are in for October’s school disco, which was very well attended. The disco made £214.43 profit compared with £151.39 last October! Thank-you to all who came and helped make this possible.

Helsby Parish Council Grant

Early this academic year, Michelle Farmer put in an application to Helsby Parish Council on behalf of the school, for a £500 grant. Our application was on the understanding that if we were awarded the money, it would be used to stage another ‘TIN-FOREST’-style Art project, and to transport it so it could go on display in a local community/Arts Centre.

We are very excited to announce that we were successful with our application, and we have been awarded the grant! On November 10th, Michelle and a few other FOH members will attend a Council meeting and officially be presented with the cheque.

We owe Michelle a big THANK-YOU and WELL DONE for her efforts in securing this funding, and we know the children will all enjoy putting it to good use.

Easy Fundraising

A reminder to visit the cashback website to help towards FOH funds. This system is quick and simple, and if enough of us take part, it could substantially boost our fundraising, at no cost!
