Computing
Intent - What Do We Aspire for Our Children?
Our Curriculum Intent for Computing
Our Computing curriculum is designed to provide all pupils with a comprehensive understanding of how technology works and how it can be used creatively, responsibly, and safely. We aim to develop children’s computational thinking and problem-solving skills through engaging and practical activities that build their confidence in using digital tools.
Through a carefully sequenced programme, pupils gain knowledge and skills across key areas including programming, digital literacy, information technology, and online safety. We strive to nurture curiosity and creativity, encouraging children to become independent learners who can apply their computing skills across the wider curriculum and everyday life.
We are committed to ensuring that every child becomes a confident, responsible digital citizen, prepared to thrive in an increasingly digital world and ready to continue their learning at secondary school and beyond.
Curriculum Implementation
At Helsby Hillside, Computing is taught using the Teach Computing scheme of work, developed by the National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE). This scheme provides a fully resourced, sequenced curriculum that ensures comprehensive coverage of the National Curriculum for Computing across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
The curriculum is structured around five key strands of learning:
-
Computing systems and networks
-
Creating media
-
Programming
-
Data and information
-
Design and development (KS2 onwards)
These strands are taught through a spiral curriculum model, meaning key concepts are revisited and built upon over time to deepen understanding and support knowledge retention.
Weekly computing lessons include a mix of practical, unplugged, and on-screen activities, allowing pupils to explore computing in meaningful, age-appropriate contexts. Each unit is underpinned by a clear progression of skills and knowledge, with regular opportunities for retrieval and assessment. Digital literacy and online safety are embedded throughout the curriculum and reinforced through additional 'Project Evolve' lessons.
The Teach Computing scheme also provides high-quality resources, teacher guidance, and CPD materials to support confident delivery by all staff, regardless of prior computing experience. Lessons are inclusive and adaptable to meet the needs of all learners, including those with SEND.
