Intent - What Do We Aspire for Our Children?
Our Curriculum Intent for French
At Hillside Primary School, learning a language provides an intercultural experience for our children, allowing them to deepen their understanding of the world. Our curriculum has been designed to include the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing necessary to enable children to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts and to lay the foundation for future language learning. It is designed to develop these skills progressively through regularly taught lessons in KS2 where children will acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics, enabling them to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in both speech and writing.
Our children leave Hillside with the foundations of language learning, ready for the Year 7 curriculum and with a broader understanding of the world we live in.
Our Curriculum
French is taught fortnightly in Years 3 to 6, with each lesson carefully planned to introduce and reinforce key vocabulary, grammar, and conversational skills. The PLN scheme ensures progression across year groups and builds pupils’ confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in French.
Key Features of Our Implementation:
-
Spiral Curriculum: Language learning is revisited and built upon year after year, ensuring secure understanding and long-term retention.

-
Assessment and Progress Tracking: Regular opportunities for assessment allow teachers to monitor progress and ensure that all pupils are developing their language skills effectively.
