Year 2 2021 - 2022

Mrs Fletcher-Curran

Mrs Quraishy

Mrs Evans

Welcome to Year 2!

Year 2 is taught by Mrs Fletcher-Curran Monday-Thursday am

Mrs Quraishy on Thursday pm and Friday.

Friday 1st July 2022

Dear all,

Year 2 have had another fantastic week. In Maths we have continued to learn about capacity and volume. We have experimented with how many cups of water are needed to fill different sized containers and have compared the volume of different containers as well.

In English we have continued with our work on The Last Wolf. We reminisced in character about the ‘good old days’ and wrote diary entries about the different activities we got up to in the past as the wolf, lynx and bear. Today we have been trying to convince the wolf to either eat Red, or to not eat Red. We thought about the pros and cons of both and used persuasive language in our arguments.

There is no spelling homework this week. Next Friday I will be testing the children on a random selection of the spellings that have been set throughout the year so nothing new to learn.

Thank you all for your very generous donations of toys for the Summer Fair! I hope you all enjoy yourselves this evening.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Quraishy

Friday 24th June 2022

Dear all,

Year 2 have had another fantastic week! In English we have been reading The Magic Faraway Tree and have been writing character descriptions, as well as using 'est' words to describe the woods from The Last Wolf. In Maths we have been learning about capacity and volume and experimenting with the amount of water different containers can hold and how we can describe this. In Science we looked at the growth of the cress we planted in four different conditions to see how it had grown.

Year 2 did a fantastic job yesterday in Race for Life and raised lots of money - thank you for sponsoring your children.

Your children have been given their new spellings to learn for the week - please help them practise throughout the week.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs Quraishy

Friday 17th June 2022

Dear all,

Year 2 have had a fantastic week and have been enjoying the beautiful weather we have been blessed with. In English we have been reading The Last Wolf and have been thinking about what we would include in our kit bag if we were hunting a wolf. In Maths we have been learning about weight – we have been weighing objects and reading scales to the nearest 5g.

In Science we have started our experiment to find out what plants need to grow. We have planted cress seeds in 4 different conditions and will monitor each group to see how they grow over the next few weeks. Group 1 has water and light, group 2 has light but no water, group 3 has water but no light and group 4 has no light and no water. Which group do you think will grow the best?

It has been very hot this week – please make sure that your child has a sun hat and sun cream with them in school, as well as a full water bottle filled with water, not juice.

Your children have been sent home with their weekly spellings – please help them to learn their spellings throughout the week.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Quraishy

Friday 10th June 2022

Dear all,

Year 2 have had a fantastic week! In English we have been writing a recount of our Jubilee celebrations over half term. We have also read part of George's Marvellous Medicine and made up our own medicine to give to Granny, thinking about what it would make her do and all the ingredients we would want to include.

In Maths we have been learning how to find 1/3 of an amount by sharing the amount between 3 equal groups.

In Science this week we have been learning about the different parts of a plant and the job that each part does. We went into our garden and did observational drawings of the different plants we could see, labelling the stem, roots and leaves. We then did bark and leaf rubbings to see the different texture and patterns on the trees in our playground.

Your children have been sent home with their weekly spellings. Please help your child practise these spellings ready for our test next week.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Quraishy

Thursday 26th May 2022

In Science this week we investigated what happens to our heart rate when we are resting compared to our heart rate when we are exercising.

The children have been sent home with a pack all about contractions for their homework this week as the spelling test showed me that lots of children need some more practise in spelling these words.

You do not need to complete all of the sheets in your pack Year 2, just try your best to work your way through it carefully!

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Quraishy

Dear all,

Year 2 have had a fantastic start to the new term! In English we have been writing WANTED posters for the skeletons in Funny Bones, focussing on different sentence types in our writing. In Maths we have been drawing the other half of shapes with a line of symmetry - we have found this quite tricky and found it difficult drawing straight lines with a ruler so we will be practising this skill later in the week.  In Science we have been learning about how animals change as they grow into adult animals - we were really surprised to see how a ladybird changes! We then looked at the lifecycle of a frog and discussed how a frog changes many times throughout its life.

I have sent out spellings today for the children to learn for their test next week- please help your child practise these spellings.

We have had lots of lost jumpers and coats already so please make sure your child's belongings are clearly labelled with their name.

Friday 25th March 2022

Dear all,

Year 2 have had another fantastic week! In English we have been describing where dragons may live using different sentence types. In Phonics we learned about words that make an /o/ sound (same /o/ as in f o g) but are spelt with the grapheme /a/, for example watch and want.

In Maths we have continued learning about data handling and today we started a new unit about shape. We used paper straws and playdoh to make and describe 2d shapes. We then build up to add dimension to our 2d shapes and turn them into 3d shapes.

In Science we learned about how we recycle materials and the process of recycling plastic bottles and glass.

Your children have been sent home with their weekly spellings. Please help them learn and practise them throughout the week in preparation for our spelling test on Friday.

Have a great weekend and a very happy Mother’s Day!

Mrs Quraishy

Friday 18th March 2022

Dear all,

We have had a brilliant week this week. In English today we noticed that the dragon eggs had hatched and our classroom was overrun with cheeky, mischievous baby dragons! We wrote a letter to Mr Khan telling him all about the situation – we made sure that we included a statement, command, question and exclamation in our letter to him.

In Maths we have been looking at data handling this week. We have learned how to collect and represent data on a tally chart, and today on a bar chart.

In Science this week we have been experimenting with how we can manipulate materials and whether they change from being squashed, bent, twisted or stretched.

Your children have all been sent home with their weekly spellings. Please help them learn their spellings throughout the week as we had lots of misspelt words today in our test.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Quraishy

Friday 11th March 2022

Dear all,

Year 2 have had another busy week! The children had a fantastic time on their residential trip to Burwardsley and I know the staff members who accompanied them did too.

In School we have been solving division word problems, learning about different sentence types and writing descriptions of dragons! We have tested our boats that we made in Science last week and have been observing which materials have been the most buoyant.

In RHE today we have been thinking about how to manage different emotions, such as disappointment and jealousy. These are tricky emotions to deal with and may make us feel sad, cross angry and upset. We talked about how it is healthy to feel like this at times and discussed ways in which we can help our bodies and minds calm down.

The children have been sent home with their spellings today. Please help them learn them over the week as they will be tested on them next Friday.

Have a great weekend!

Mrs Quraishy

Friday 4th March 2022

Dear all,

Year 2 have had another fantastic week! We have jumped straight back into our work after half term.

In English we were very surprised to come into our classroom and find large, green footprints leading to a chest with a metal lock on the front. When we opened the chest we found three large, cream eggs. I wonder which animal they belong to? An ostrich? Or maybe….a dragon? I think we will learn more about the eggs next week. How exciting!

We have revisited division by grouping and in SPAG today we learned about different sentence types and the punctuation they each need.

In Science we made our boats using the recycling materials you all kindly brought in. Thank you. We will be testing them next week to see whether they float and how many passengers they can hold.

In Computing we looked at Turtle Logo today, learning how to input code to make the turtle follow different commands.

I have not given the children spellings to learn this week as they will be away on their residential trip on Monday and Tuesday.

I hope you all have a fantastic time on your residential trip Year 2 – I look forward to hearing all about it next week.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs Quraishy

Friday 18th February 2022

Dear all,

Year 2 have had a fantastic week! In Maths we have been looking at division and have been dividing a number of objects by sharing them into equal groups, writing the number sentence to match. In English we have finished our unit about The Great Fire of London by writing a newspaper report. We have also been learning about suffix /ly/ and how to change words to adverbs by adding /ly/.

In Science this week we have designed a boat, choosing suitable materials based on their properties. We chose materials that were waterproof, not absorbent, light and that would float.

After half term we will be making our boats – please keep hold of any recycling materials and bring them into school for us to use. We will need:

  • Plastic bottles
  • Plastic food containers
  • Paper plates
  • Straws
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Milk cartons
  • Juice cartons
  • Egg boxes
Moving forwards, in the event of any Year 2 pupil testing positive for Coronavirus, if they remain well enough, school work will be sent for them to complete either by email (or the Year 2 class webpage will be updated daily if more than one pupil is off at any one time). Work can then be brought into school upon return and this will be marked in line with pupils who have undertaken the work in class.

I hope you all have a lovely and very restful half term,

Mrs Quraishy

In Science this week we have been on a materials hunt to see how materials can be used in different ways in our environment. We then looked at how materials can change from their original state to what we see in shops, for example how wool from a sheep changes into a woolly hat.

The children have been sent home with their spellings for this week, please help them learn their spellings ready for their spelling test on Friday.

Moving forwards, in the event of any Year 2 pupil testing positive for Coronavirus, if they remain well enough, school work will be sent for them to complete either by email (or the Year 2 class webpage will be updated daily if more than one pupil is off at any one time). Friday 14th January 2022

Dear all,

Year 2 have had a great week! We have started our English unit learning about The Great Fire of London. We have identified the key features of a non-fiction text and have been sorting sentences into fiction/non-fiction categories. We have also started reading The Great Fire of London by Emma Adams and James Weston Lewis - we did not like the sound of the living conditions in London in 1666!

Please see the link below to an animated story of The Great Fire of London.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/history-ks1-the-great-fire-of-london-home/zph4g7h

In Maths we have continued to learn about multiplication and how to recognise that multiplication is the same as repeated addition.

I will upload the worksheet we completed today for any children who have been absent.

The children enjoyed a brilliant assembly today by Rev. Mills all about the gift of giving. We also spent time discussing how beautifully different we all are and have been celebrating our diversity in our KS1 assembly this week.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs Quraishy

Friday 7th January 2022

Happy New Year!

Dear all,

Year 2 have had a fantastic first week back after Christmas. It has been so lovely to see their smiling faces and so lovely to finally have a full class back in! We have been learning about colour mixing this week and how we can mix the primary colours to make different shades of secondary colours. We then looked at different artists who have used shades of the same colour in their paintings and painted our own flame pictures. We have read the book Blown Away by Rob Biddulph this week and have been thinking about how our homes make us feel. We also designed our own deserted island and thought carefully about who we would want to share that island with and why.

If your child is absent from school then please check this webpage for work that we will be uploading weekly.

I would like to say a huge thank you to all the children and grownups for the kind Christmas wishes, cards, and presents that I received at the end of last half term. I have thank you cards for everyone which I will give to the children on Thursday.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs Quraishy
