Intent - What Do We Aspire for Our Children?

Our Curriculum Intent for Science

At Helsby Hillside, Science is a vital part of the curriculum that encourages children to be curious, inquisitive, and confident in exploring the world around them. We aim to develop pupils' understanding of scientific concepts through a combination of practical investigations, questioning, observation, and discussion. Our curriculum is designed to build a solid foundation in biology, chemistry, and physics, while also fostering a sense of awe and wonder.

We encourage children to think like scientists - asking questions, making predictions, testing ideas, and drawing conclusions based on evidence. Through engaging, hands-on learning experiences, pupils develop not only their scientific knowledge and vocabulary but also key skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. By the end of their primary journey, we want all children to leave with a deepened understanding of the natural and physical world, and the confidence to continue their scientific learning in the next stage of their education.

Curriculum Implementation

Science is taught using the Developing Experts scheme, which provides a comprehensive, enquiry-based curriculum designed to deepen pupils’ scientific knowledge and understanding through carefully sequenced lessons. The scheme aligns with the National Curriculum and is structured around a thoughtfully designed curriculum model that ensures clear progression of knowledge, skills, and vocabulary across all key stages.

Science lessons are delivered regularly, using engaging, interactive resources that combine digital content, practical activities, and real-world contexts to make learning relevant and exciting. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions, test ideas, and explore concepts independently and collaboratively, fostering curiosity and a love of science.

Developing Experts supports clear progression in scientific vocabulary and concepts, with carefully scaffolded lessons that revisit and build upon prior learning. Assessment is integrated throughout, enabling teachers to monitor understanding and provide timely support to all learners.

Through this approach, pupils develop a strong foundation in the scientific principles and methods that underpin the natural world, preparing them for future study and helping them become informed, inquisitive learners.
